Garden State Parkway in Southern NJ
Exploring New Jersey on Route 444
Atlantic City, New Jersey
It’s easy to travel through southern New Jersey on the Garden State Parkway. Route 444 trails down to Cape May, the southernmost point of the state, and passes through Garden State cities like Toms River and Egg Harbor Township – set just west of Atlantic City.
This is where the Garden State Parkway takes its travelers straight to outdoor fun. The parkway passes Allaire State Park, Double Trouble State Park, and Jakes Branch County Park. South of Toms River, Route 444 courses through the Bass River State Forest – just northeast of Absecon.
A 23,563-acre state park, Bass River State Forest is set in southern New Jersey along – you guessed it – the Bass River. Here, visitors of the Garden State have been fishing, hiking, boating, and viewing wildlife since 1905. Canoe across the 77-acre Lake Absegami, or explore the 3,830-acre West Pine Plains Natural Area – preserving a rare pygmy forest. Hikers, lace up your boots for a journey through the Absegami Natural Area, or tackle the 50-mile Batona Trail passing through the entirety of Bass River State Park.
Trailing just east of the Atlantic City International Airport, the Garden State Parkway also takes you straight to Pleasantville and Atlantic City. From Route 444, take the Atlantic City Expressway east toward the Atlantic City Convention Center and the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk. Here you may explore casinos, go shopping, and fill up on incredible seafood. Once you’re on the boardwalk, check out the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum, the House of Blues, or the historic Ocean Pier – built in 1882.
