Visiting the Northwest New Jersey Skylands
As spring and summer warmth make the long winter seem like a distant memory, special events, festivals, and activities make a day outdoors more and more attractive. From Ramsey to Morristown to Monmouth, the Skylands are in full color this season.
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is located in New Brunswick, between the communities of South Plainfield and East Brunswick. The RU campus is dotted with public sculpture, including a recent Julian Voss-Andreae work titled Synergy. Summer is the time to enjoy a stroll through campus before the return of the Scarlet Knights and their fans at the end of summer.
The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers hosts its signature after-hour program each first Tuesday of the month as part of the 2015 Art After Hours: First Tuesdays series. Don’t wait to long – the last event is September 1st.
And there’s even more art to be enjoyed in Ramsey this summer. The 2015 Shady Grove Arts & Crafts Fest features over 150 juried artisans, craftsmen, and photographers from the tri-state area and beyond.
If the weather in Ramsey gets a little too warm and muggy this summer, cool off at the community pool. The Ramsey Pool features a four-acre facility with a fifty-meter pool, diving well, and wading pool. There’s plenty of lawn and activities for all. Look for the pool opening Memorial Day weekend.
10 miles southeast of Morristown, New Providence is located on the western slope of the Watching Mountains on banks of the Passaic River. An ideal destination for families in search of special events and activities, New Providence hosts Union County Family Fun & Flix various evenings throughout the summer. The Union County Summer Arts Concert Series fills Echo Lake Park and Oak Ridge Park on Wednesday nights as musicians perform live.
