Visiting New Jersey's Skylands | Fall 2014

The New Jersey’s Skylands offer visitors plenty of small town charm as communities throughout the region are set to host a number of holiday festivals and local events. Whether you’re visiting the region for business or pleasure, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do in northwest New Jersey this holiday season.

Family-friendly holiday fun can be found in the borough of Ramsey on October 25th, when the Ramsey Halloween Parade and Costume Contest sees a host of pint-sized ghouls and goblins make their way from Finch Park to Ramsey High School. The event culminates in a costume contest, with prizes awarded to the spookiest kids and tasty treats given to everyone who participates. The parade begins at 10 a.m.

Just south of Ramsey, the Morristown National Historical Park in – you guessed it – Morristown is a great way to spend an afternoon. History buffs will enjoy visiting the park’s three sites, including Jockey Hollow, Fort Nonsense, and the Ford Mansion. Each site dates back to the late 1700s and carries significance to the Revolutionary War, having once served as the winter headquarters for George Washington’s soldiers.

East Brunswick, a township just outside of New Brunswick, is the home of Rutgers University’s Rutgers Gardens. While school may not be in session this December, visitors can still enjoy the campus by attending the Rutgers Gardens Winter Farm Market on December 5th and 12th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as Rutgers Gardens vendors will be selling plenty of agriculture and homegrown products.

South Plainfield visitors, work-off the extra turkey day pounds and get into the holiday spirit by joining community residents as they participate in the South Plainfield Jingle Bell/Run Walk 5K for arthritis. Race participants are encouraged to wear holiday-themed costumes as they give back to the community this holiday.
