Visiting Newark & the Gateway Region

Gateway to both the unmatched scale and personality of New York City and the suburban charm of northern New Jersey – depending on which direction you’re traveling – the New Jersey Gateway region is a destination in its own right this spring and summer. Communities from Newark to Ramsey to Lakewood promise plenty to see and do, in the form of special events, annual festivals, sports, historic attractions, and all kinds of kid-friendly activities.

Skip the overpriced boutiques of Brooklyn and the big crowds at the flagships along 5th Avenue in NYC – the New Jersey Gateway boasts a broad selection of shopping destinations. Check out The Mills at Jersey Gardens, near Newark in Elizabeth, where you can browse over 200 retailers before catching an IMAX movie at the AMC Loews Jersey Gardens 20.

There’s plenty of pet-friendly fun in northeast New Jersey this summer. On July 17th and 18th, fans of the four legged head for Morristown’s William G. Mennen Sports Arena, this year’s home of the Twin Brooks Kennel Club Dog Show. The furry fun goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, with competitions in a number of different categories, including the highly sought-after “Best in Show.”

For arts and crafts lovers visiting Morristown, the 2016 Industrial Crafts Day, in nearby Chester, is an interesting way to spend an afternoon. Engage in hands-on activities, see all kinds of early industrial crafts, and learn from demonstrations by a tinsmith, tin piercers, a blacksmith, weavers, and spinners. It all takes place at the Cooper Gristmill on Route 513 between noon and 4 p.m.

As summer simmers down, Morristown gears up for one of its residents’ favorite annual events. The 2016 County Fair & Harvest Festival is held at the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, inviting families to take part in wagon rides, a petting zoo, live music, and more before enjoying a variety of food options in the Food Truck Zone.
