Visiting Newark & the Gateway Region
Standing tall above the shadow of the New York skyline, Newark and surrounding communities from Fort Lee to Hazlet welcome fall visitors with plenty to see and do. Sports, special events, fall festivals, holiday celebrations, and family-friendly activities – the New Jersey Gateway offers an array of ways to have fun outdoors before the cold weather arrives.
New Jersey sports fans have a lot to be excited for in the fall. Newark is home to the New Jersey Devils, who, after dropping the puck on their 2015-16 season on October 9th, continue to shred the ice at the Prudential Center through mid-April.
Despite the misnomer, New Jersey is also home to the New York Giants and New York Jets, and the 2015 NFL season is underway. Two teams means twice the hard-hitting football action, with home games happening nearly every week at MetLife Stadium. It's part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, near Fairfield and West Orange. Check the schedule to witness the heart-pounding action up close – the regular season ends January 3rd.
The 2015 New Providence Fall Festival lines Springfield Avenue in New Providence with a plethora of family-friendly entertainment and music, along with over 150 vendors and exhibitors, rides, face painting, and more, November 1st.
That same day, Fungus Fest 2015 is a lot more fun than it might sound. It's a family-friendly event focused on mushrooms, featuring everything from mushroom arts to cooking demonstrations, growing education, and more – all at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown.
Much more than just mushrooms can be found at the Morristown Farmer's Market. Sundays through November 22nd, the market invites visitors and residents to take a true taste of Morristown, offering local produce, baked goods, and other handmade products at the intersection of Spring and Morris Streets.
Families visiting New Brunswick and East Brunswick can get into the holiday spirit on December 21st, when Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer fills the State Theatre with cheer. Live performances of the classic holiday tale take place at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
More music fills the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on January 22nd. The 2015 Winter Festival: Symphonie Fantastique has the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra playing classic melodies from Macbeth, the Tempest, and other Shakespearian favorites.
