Visiting Newark & the Gateway Region
With local event calendars packed with late-summer fun, Newark and surrounding communities from Ramsey to Lakewood rise above the shadow of the New York skyline to prove the New Jersey Gateway region is a travel destination in its own right.
Travelers coming in to Newark Liberty International Airport will find the Ironbound District to the immediate north. In addition to ample shopping opportunities, the district’s attractions include the NJ Cultural Arts Center, the Newark Museum, and more.
Football fans are delivered from the dog days of summer as the New York Jets and the New York Giants gear up for the 2015 NFL season. Newark, Fort Lee, West Orange, and Fairfield visitors enjoy especially convenient access to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, where both teams host home games. Check the schedule to root on your favorite team – having two means there’s pro football action just about every weekend this fall.
Just southwest of Newark, Westfield showcases its own local talent at the 2015 Westfield Street Fair & Craft Show on August 22nd. Browse the offerings of over 200 artists, crafters, and vendors throughout the streets of downtown Westfield. Get there early for the best selection – the free event starts at at 11 a.m.
Join Westfield visitors in saying goodbye to summer at the 2015 Westfield Festifall on September 27th, when downtown Westfield draws families and friends with a variety of unique vendors, rides, festival food, and activities for the little ones.
To the west, the community of Morristown gathers in the downtown area on the last Thursday of every month this summer to showcase local retailers, musicians, and artists. The Meet Me in Morrison events are a great way to get a sense of local personality, with area galleries, shops, and restaurants opening up for the festivities around 5 p.m.
Now through November 22nd, visitors can get a true taste of Morristown by browsing a selection of fresh produce, baked items, and handmade goods at the Morristown Farmer's Market, which is open for business each Sunday morning at the intersection of Spring and Morris Streets.
