Visiting Newark & the Gateway Region | Spring 2015

The snow has melted, birds are chirping, and communities like Newark, East Brunswick, and Westfield are ascending above the shadow of the New York skyline, inviting springtime visitors with a multitude of special events, activities, festivals, and big-league sports.

The New Jersey Devils are nearing the climactic end of the 2014-2015 NHL season. Witness the action at home games at the Prudential Center in downtown Newark, select evenings through April 7th, when the Devils host the New York Rangers in the last home game of the season.

And it’s not just sports fans heading to the Prudential Center this spring – the arena hosts of a variety of big-name concerts and world-class entertainment. March 13th, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus rolls into town, on May 14th the Nitro Circus brings motocross, skateboarding and other extrememe sports, and comedian Kevin Hart brings his WHAT NOW? Tour on July 11th.

The spring semester is in session at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, which means a wealth of cultural and athletic events will be presented to students and the New Brunswick community. For sports fans, Scarlet Knights men’s baseball season goes through mid-May. And theater fans can skip the high price of Broadway tickets without sacrificing quality, April 24th through May 3rd, when Rutgers Theater Company presents Henry V at the Philip J. Levin Theater.

Everyone knows the New York City Metropolitan Area is a hub for arts and culture with countless museums and galleries lining the streets of Manhattan, but to dig in a little further, stray from the beaten path and check out lesser-known gems like the Newark Museum in Newark and the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown.

Operated in an historic 1810-era homestead, Macculloch Hall is home to the largest collection of the art of political cartoonist Thomas Nast. Don’t miss a chance to see The Civil War Through the Eyes of Thomas Nast through June 28th.
