Visiting the New Jersey Gateway | Late-Summer 2014
Standing tall beside the Big Apple, the New Jersey Gateway region finds urban and cultural distinction through a wealth of events and attractions.
Still, to sports fans, the borders may be a little blurred. All eyes, in the New York Metropolitan Area and across the state of New Jersey, are fixed on East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium, the home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets. Excitement is brimming as August preseason games give fans a look at the teams’ young talent, but it boils over on September 7th as the Jets host the Raiders in their 2014 regular season opener. The next Sunday, September 14th, the Giant’s defend the field against the Cardinals. MetLife continues to host the respective home games of both teams on alternating weekends through the end of December, meaning there’s rarely a Sunday without NFL action at the Meadowlands.
Newark hockey fans rally behind a team undeniably all their own when the first puck of the fall 2014 NHL season drops at Prudential Center on October 18th. Check the schedule during your visit to catch a New Jersey Devils home game through April 7th.
Prudential Center is also Newark’s go-to venue for big-name concerts. Relive the expansive history of one of rock’s most legendary acts when Aerosmith brings their Let Rock Rule tour to the arena on September 3rd. In addition to decades of hits, the band will have Guns N’ Roses guitar hero, Slash, in tow for a night of solos and sing-alongs.
Families visiting with little ones won’t want to miss a chance to let them shuffle their feet with Cookie Monster and Co. Sesame Street Live “Let’s Dance!” fills Prudential Center with an interactive song and dance spectacle, September 20th and 21st. Show times vary between 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday to suit naptime schedules.
As a part of the largest metropolitan area in the country, Newark is quite the cultural melting pot, and the neighborhoods within reflect cultures with roots as distant as Brazil and beyond. Join an expected 150,000 people for a celebration of Brazilian culture on September 8th, when the 19th Brazilian Day Festival and Parade of NJ takes over Independence Park, also known as “Mosquitos Park.” Festivities include food, arts and crafts vendors, live music, and fun for the kids.
