Visiting Newark & the Gateway Region
Newark and surrounding communities like Fort Lee, West Orange, and Elizabeth rise above the shadow of the New York skyline to provide an eclectic array of events and activities for visitors of all kinds. Abundant arts, culture, and big-name entertainment – this summer, visitors will find the New Jersey Gateway region has a lot more to offer than just proximity to the Big Apple.
The Newark Museum presents the 2014 Newark Black Film Festival, June 25th through August 13th. The festival features a unique collection of independent films. Screening times and locations vary throughout the festival – check the Newark Museum schedule to make sure you don’t miss an indie gem during your visit.
The National Hockey League’s New Jersey Devils are done for the 2014 season, but the Prudential Center continues to host household-name entertainers throughout the summer. High-flying, chair-smashing WWE Smackdown wrestling action comes to the Prudential Center on July 1st, before Katy Perry fills the arena with adoring tweens, on July 11th and 12th, for the New Jersey stop of her Prismatic World Tour.
More mellow music fans will appreciate the 2014 Jazz in the Garden series in the Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden at the Newark Museum. This year’s lineup of performers includes the Claudio Roditi Brazilian Jazz Quartet, Tessa Souter, and the Buster Williams Quartet. The music kicks in just after noon on Thursdays.
More arts and culture abound throughout the area this season. The 9th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival is a celebration of spirit and dance, July 25th through 27th. Then, the Central Theater in Newark hosts The Mask in the Mirror, an opera about poets Paul Dunbar and Alice Moore, on August 2nd at 7 p.m.
For a way to have fun a little off the beaten path, check out GlassRoots Studio in Newark. Visitors learn the techniques of the ancient art through special workshops and demonstrations, August 4th through 15th. Class times vary, so check the schedule during your visit to make sure you don’t miss the educational fun.
