Get on your feet in New Jersey, and explore the many walking paths and hiking trails of the Garden State. Follow the trails of the American revolutionary soldiers at the Morristown National Historical Park, or stroll past the beautiful botanical gardens at Rutgers Gardens in East Brunswick. Feel the sun and family fun during your trip to New Jersey.
Set in northern New Jersey in the city of Morristown, the Morristown National Historical Park is a pride of the Garden State, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known for housing soldiers during the American Revolutionary War, the park is divided into three sections, the Ford Mansion, Fort Nonsense, and Jockey Hollow. For some on your feet action, check out a number of the hiking trails coursing through the park, many of which were also traveled by American soldiers in the 18th century.
Set foot on a number of Blazed Trails throughout the Morristown National Historical Park. Traveling with small children? Make your way down the more kid-friendly trails such as the 2.25-mile Soldier Hut Trail, or the 1.13-mile Primrose Brook Trail. If you’re kids are now teenagers, try the moderate, three-mile New York Brigade Trail. And lastly, for those looking to work up a sweat, try the more strenuous, 6.5-mile Grand Loop Trail, or the looped, 5.5-mile New Jersey Brigade Trail.
Less than an hour south is East Brunswick, home to the beautiful Rutgers Gardens. Free to the public, the Rutgers Gardens are found on the Cook campus of the well-known Rutgers University in central New Jersey. Stroll past botanical gardens and small forests, and get a picture next to the Log Cabin – built in 1936 – with the family. Check out Rutgers Gardens attractions like the Bamboo Forest, the Donald B. Lacey Display Garden, and the Rhododendron and Azalea Garden. Arboretum aficionados, this might be your favorite day in outdoor New Jersey.
